Goodbye Poopy

Late one night, when Lant was clearing off the snow covered driveway, he thought he saw something scurry into our garage.  Over the last couple months, now and then, we heard something move about in our garage.  We would go to look, and nothing.  Well nothing but rabbit pellets everywhere, so we knew a bunny was still staying at our house.  We knick-named our friend "Poopy" because of the gifts he kept leaving for us.
On Sunday, the weather was beautiful and Lant decided to clean out the garage (and get rid of Poopy's gifts if ya know what I mean).  Well as he moved the lawn mower and removed its cover, he AND the kids discovered our friend had died and curled up under the seat.  There was no hiding this from the kids, so tears and sorrow followed.  For a while.  A long while.  We ended up burying Poopy in the backyard near a big evergreen tree.  We found a rock and used it as a head stone, the kids also wrote in sidewalk chalk "sorry you died" and "Poopy" on it.  After a couple words and tears, we said our goodbyes.  In my mind I'm thinking I am so glad we don't really have a pet, this could be really ugly if we did.  And yes, I had my camera there for the funeral, but the look on Max's face makes me cry every time I see the picture.
On Monday it rained off and on.  When Max got off the bus he went straight to the grave to check on Poopy.  He rushed into the house to announce the sidewalk chalk had washed away (he was not happy).  I tried to reassure him that Poopy was in heaven and the rock was still there, but no use.  Then the kid down the street called and asked him to come play...bunny forgotten.  Onto the next drama.
